PJ Masks ‪睡衣小英雄

Blame it on the Train, Owlette - 那都是猫头鹰女的错

PJ Masks is a superhero team of 3 kids that fights crime at night to keep it from ruining people's days. During the day, Amaya, Connor and Greg lead totally normal lives, but they transform into superheroes during the night and use their powers to fight villains and solve mysteries. Amaya becomes Owlette (猫头鹰女), Greg becomes Gekko (飞壁侠), and Connor becomes Catboy (猫小子). Each episode portrays meaningful lessons, such as team work, respect, patience, looking out for each other and most importantly forgiveness. The episodes are wonderfully scripted and well written.

Octonauts 海底小纵队

The Octonauts and the Long Armed Squid

Octonauts, to your stations! 海底小纵队, 各就各位! The Octonauts are a dynamic eight-member team of quirky and courageous adventure heroes who dive into action whenever there is trouble under the sea. Their mission: Explore! (探险), Rescue!(拯救) and Protect! (保护). Each episode is approximately 11 minute long with them encountering an unusual but real sea creature as they explore strange underwater worlds. They usually discover a vital biological or behavioural fact about that creature and rescue it or themselves from danger.

My children have not only learnt so much about exotic sea creatures as the locations that the Octanauts encounter are based on real marine animals in their natural habitats, but also subliminally the names of the marine mandarin as well. The mandarin subtitles are well sized and clear which are very useful if you child is learning to recognise Chinese characters. One of my favourite cartoons for the kids to watch.

喜羊羊与灰太狼之虎虎生威 “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf”

喜羊羊与灰太狼之虎虎生威 “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” (I would have personally translated it as “The Happy Goat and the Formidable Big Bad Wolf”) is a very well popular and well-loved Chinese animated cartoon about a group of goats living on peaceful green pastures.

The story revolves around a clumsy wolf who wants to hunt and eat them, rather like the love hate relationship between Tom and Jerry. You will have episodes of the Wolf’s numerous attempts to capture the lambs and the mayhem and destruction that follows. The Wolf rarely succeeds in catching the lambs, mainly because of their cleverness, cunning abilities, and luck.

Since its debut in June 2005, has become the most successful domestic cartoon series in recent years. Recommended for aged 5 and above.

Chibi Maruko-chan 小丸子 is a heart-warming manga anime series which depicts the simple, everyday life of a young girl everyone calls Maruko, and her family in suburban Japan in the year 1974.

As such one can sense the nostalgic, honest and thoughtful tone of the cartoon which led to it becoming an enduring favourite children TV cartoon series among a wider audience.

Recommended for aged 5 and above.

棉花糖和云朵妈妈 – Cotton Candy and Cloud Mummy

Cotton Candy (棉花糖)has a timid personality. In order to become more courageous, Cotton Candy along with her good friends devised “a plan” to bolster her confidence.

Follow Cotton Candy, her loyal friends Big Head Kid (大头儿子) and Melon (地瓜) as well as her loving parents, Blue Sky Daddy (蓝天爸爸) and Cloud Mummy (云朵妈妈) as she realises her dream. Rather peculiar names but trust me they sound much more endearing when said in Mandarin.

Each episode is 13 minutes long. Recommended for aged 5 and above.

Super Wings 超级飞侠

一起放风筝 The Right Kite

Super Wings 超级飞侠 (chāo jí fēi xiá) is a delightful cartoon series that introduces concepts of diversity and world customs. It is one of my favourite cartoons for my child to watch as he learns about how people in different parts of the world live, dress, eat, and play, while learning mandarin at the same time. It not only exposes him to well-known geographical sites but also introduces cultural diversity through the adventures of 乐迪 (Jett), a friendly and helpful airplane. It also encourages teamwork as we follow the characters coming together to solve problems.

In this episode 一起放风筝 (yī qǐ fàng fēng zhēng) or known as The Right Kite in the English episode of Super Wings takes you to the Himalayas introducing the word Namaste (Hello). 阿佳斯 (Akash) wants to participate in a kite-flying festival. PocoYo 小P优优

该睡觉啦 Bedtime

I love Pocoyo, probably more than my children. Pocoyo's name is actually Spanish which translates to Little (Poco) Me (yo).

Being a 4 year old, he is at the age where he is beginning to learn about his emotions, the world and the people around him. Like any other toddler he exhibits extreme behaviour from very independent to dependent or from very helpful to being very stubborn. When he is unhappy or angry, he may throw tantrums or storm off in a huff. He can be irrational at times and takes his anger out on his friends. But he learns something new in each episode to help him understand himself better and be learn to control his feelings.

Each episode is 7 minutes long and has subtitles in simplified Chinese. Recommended for aged 3 and above.

In this episode, Pato is trying to sleep but Pocoyo is still very awake. He starts to by pretending to be an airplane, and then continues to play with blocks, and finally moves on to a train set before he falls asleep. However, after all the noise, Pato is wide awake and cannot sleep!
